PM Shehbaz Sharif and President Zardari Urge Pakistanis to Join Earth Hour 2026 for Sustainable Future

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari have called on citizens across Pakistan to actively participate in Earth Hour 2026 by switching off non-essential lights, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing climate change and ensuring a sustainable future.

Earth Hour, a global environmental initiative organized annually by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is being observed this year under the theme “Give an Hour for Earth.” The campaign encourages individuals, communities, and businesses worldwide to turn off unnecessary lights for one hour, symbolizing commitment to energy conservation and environmental protection.

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that Earth Hour is more than a symbolic gesture. He stressed that small individual actions, when combined, can lead to significant social and environmental change. He urged citizens to switch off lights between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm and reflect on their role in combating environmental degradation.

President Asif Ali Zardari, in a separate statement, underscored the urgency of adopting sustainable lifestyles. He pointed out that Pakistan, despite contributing less than one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, remains one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. He emphasized that issues such as floods, heatwaves, droughts, and unpredictable weather patterns continue to pose serious challenges to the nation.

The President also highlighted the impact of climate change on agriculture, urban living, and water resources. Farmers are increasingly facing uncertainty due to shifting rainfall patterns, while rising temperatures are placing additional strain on urban infrastructure and electricity systems.

Pakistan has witnessed severe climate-related disasters in recent years, including devastating floods that caused significant loss of life and economic damage. These challenges underline the need for immediate and sustained action to protect the environment.

Both leaders stressed that responsible energy use, sustainable development practices, and public awareness are key to mitigating climate risks. They urged citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits beyond Earth Hour and contribute to building a resilient and environmentally conscious society.

Earth Hour 2026 serves as a reminder that collective efforts, even small ones, can play a crucial role in safeguarding the planet for future generations.
