The National Assembly of Pakistan was adjourned after opposition lawmakers staged a strong protest against the recent surge in fuel prices, preventing the House from conducting any scheduled business.
The session, held in Islamabad, was set to cover a 90-point agenda, including the question hour, legislative bills, and policy discussions. However, proceedings were disrupted before they could begin, as opposition members raised slogans against the government’s decision to increase petrol and diesel prices.
The protest was triggered by a significant hike in fuel prices, which saw petrol rates increase by 43% and high-speed diesel by 55%. The decision came amid global oil market pressures linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Ghulam Mustafa Shah, who was presiding over the session, was forced to adjourn the sitting as the situation made it impossible to proceed with parliamentary business.
As a result, important agenda items, including discussions on net metering policy for solar energy and various legislative matters, could not be addressed.
The disruption highlights the political impact of rising fuel prices, as opposition parties used the platform to express public concerns over inflation and economic pressure.
