Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Announces Cultural Reforms in Police to Improve Public Interaction

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a comprehensive cultural reform initiative aimed at improving public interaction within the Punjab Police. The initiative focuses on promoting respect, professionalism, and accountability among police personnel across the province.

Addressing a high-level meeting, the chief minister emphasized that police officers must interact with citizens in a courteous and dignified manner. She highlighted that public confidence in law enforcement largely depends on the attitude and communication style of officers who engage directly with the community.

As part of the reform plan, police personnel will undergo structured training programs designed to enhance communication skills, professional conduct, and body language. Officers have been advised to address citizens using respectful terms such as “sir,” “madam,” “sahib,” or “sahiba,” ensuring a positive and professional environment during public interactions.

The chief minister noted that repeated public complaints regarding intimidating language and behavior have necessitated immediate corrective action. She stressed that any form of disrespectful or dismissive language during official duty would not be tolerated, reaffirming that safeguarding citizens’ dignity remains a top priority.

In addition to behavioral training, the reform initiative includes accountability measures such as regular performance evaluations and transparent complaint-handling mechanisms. Citizens’ complaints will be registered promptly, and officers will be expected to take responsibility for mistakes rather than dismiss concerns.

To further enhance transparency, the Punjab Police will gradually introduce body cameras for officers and traffic personnel. These devices are intended to ensure fairness, improve accountability, and strengthen public trust in law enforcement operations.

Senior police leadership has also announced plans to install emergency complaint systems outside police stations, allowing citizens to report misconduct or inaction quickly. Counseling sessions and professional development workshops are being prepared to support long-term improvements in public service standards.

The reform drive reflects the provincial government’s broader goal of strengthening institutional professionalism and fostering a service-oriented approach within law enforcement. Officials believe these measures will contribute to a more responsive, transparent, and citizen-friendly policing system across Punjab.
