ISLAMABAD: Twenty-one internationally renowned former cricket captains have once again written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging Pakistani authorities to ensure that former Pakistan captain and PTI founder Imran Khan receives appropriate medical treatment.
In their latest letter, the cricket personalities expressed concern over developments surrounding Khan’s medical care and said the situation did not appear to be consistent with directions issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The former cricket captains recalled that the Supreme Court had directed that Imran Khan be transferred to a hospital for a medical examination by a specialised medical board. The board was to include Khan’s personal doctors as well as his sister, Dr Uzma Khan.
The letter also referred to the court’s direction concerning the restoration of weekly meetings between Imran Khan and his family members.
The cricket legends renewed their appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the relevant authorities to ensure that Khan receives proper medical attention and that the Supreme Court’s directions concerning his treatment are implemented.
The appeal has attracted attention because of Imran Khan’s prominent history in international cricket. Before entering politics, Khan served as captain of Pakistan’s national cricket team and led the country to its historic 1992 Cricket World Cup victory.
The letter was signed by several prominent former captains and figures from international cricket, including Michael Atherton, Alex Blackwell, Allan Border, Mike Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Alastair Cook, Mike Gatting, Sunil Gavaskar, Leah Germain, Adam Gilchrist, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Arjuna Ranatunga, Andrew Strauss, Dilip Vengsarkar, Steve Waugh and John Wright.
Many of the signatories represented major cricket-playing nations and have played leading roles in international cricket over several decades.
The renewed appeal comes amid continued attention surrounding Imran Khan’s health and access to medical treatment while he remains in custody.
The former cricket captains have urged Pakistani authorities to ensure that the former international cricket star receives medical care in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions.
