Bugti Pledges Balochistan Govt Support for Journalists, Announces Welfare and Media Reforms

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti has reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting journalists, emphasizing that a free, responsible, and informed press is essential for a strong democratic system. His remarks came ahead of World Press Freedom Day, highlighting the importance of media in promoting transparency and accountability.

Acknowledging the challenging conditions faced by journalists in Balochistan, the chief minister paid tribute to more than 40 media professionals who lost their lives while performing their duties. He described their sacrifices as significant and unforgettable, underscoring the risks associated with journalism in the region.

To strengthen the media sector, Bugti announced that the Siddiq Baloch Media Academy in Quetta will be made fully operational. The academy will provide modern training, research opportunities, and skill development programs to help journalists adapt to evolving media trends.

The government is also taking steps to improve the welfare of journalists. The seed funding for the Journalists Welfare Endowment Fund has been increased to provide financial assistance during emergencies. Efforts are underway to enhance health insurance coverage, emergency support systems, and other benefits for media workers and their families.

In addition, the provincial government has approved a housing scheme specifically for journalists, aimed at providing secure and dignified living facilities. Progress on the project is ongoing, with a commitment to timely completion.

Bugti also announced the approval of Balochistan’s first digital media policy, designed to support the growth of digital platforms while maintaining the importance of print and electronic media. He assured that these developments would not negatively impact employment within the media industry.

Reiterating his commitment, the chief minister emphasized that protecting press freedom and ensuring the safety and independence of journalists remain key priorities. These initiatives aim to build a balanced, progressive, and informed society in Balochistan.
