PMD Issues GLOF Alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and KP, Heatwave Warning for Karachi

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an urgent GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a new weather system approaches the region. According to the latest advisory, a westerly wave is expected to enter northern areas from May 3, bringing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.

Experts warn that the combination of rising temperatures followed by intense rainfall could significantly increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods in vulnerable mountainous regions. Areas including Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Ghanche, Astore, and surrounding valleys have been identified as high-risk zones.

Authorities have advised residents living near riverbanks and streams to take precautionary measures, including relocating livestock and essential belongings to safer locations. Communities are also urged to monitor water levels, unusual sounds, and changes in water color, which could indicate potential flooding.

Meanwhile, the PMD has also issued a heatwave alert for Karachi and several districts of Sindh. Temperatures in Karachi are expected to rise above 40°C, with the “feels-like” temperature potentially reaching up to 50°C due to humidity and weather conditions.

The department has emphasized the importance of staying updated through official weather advisories and taking necessary precautions to minimize risks. Disaster management authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert and maintain coordination in affected regions.

This dual weather warning highlights the increasing impact of climate change in Pakistan, where extreme weather events such as floods and heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense.
