Karachi Red Line BRT Lot 2 Contract Terminated Over Delays and Poor Performance

The contract for Lot 2 of the Karachi Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has officially been terminated due to persistent delays and unsatisfactory performance by the contractor. The decision was taken by TransKarachi after repeated concerns about slow progress and failure to meet required standards.

The affected section, stretching from Mosamiyat to Numaish, is a crucial part of the Karachi Red Line BRT corridor. However, construction work on this segment has faced continuous setbacks since the project’s launch in 2022. Originally scheduled for completion by June 2024, the project remains incomplete in 2026, causing frustration among commuters.

A recent visit by a delegation from the Asian Development Bank further exposed serious issues in the project. The team raised concerns about the pace of construction, quality of work, and non-compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Following these observations, authorities initiated formal proceedings to terminate the contract. In addition, the contractor’s office linked to Lot 2 has been sealed by district administration, with police ensuring enforcement of the decision.

The Karachi Red Line BRT project is divided into two major sections:

  • Lot 1: Airport Signal to Mosamiyat
  • Lot 2: Mosamiyat to Numaish

Among these, Lot 2 has faced the most challenges, including financial disputes, halted construction, and legal complications. These issues have significantly delayed progress and disrupted traffic flow across major routes in Karachi.

The termination of the contract marks a critical turning point for the project. While authorities aim to restore momentum, the delay continues to impact thousands of daily commuters who rely on improved public transport infrastructure.

Moving forward, stakeholders will need to address operational inefficiencies and ensure stricter oversight to prevent further delays in this vital urban transport project.
