Heavy Rain and Hailstorm Lash Lahore as CM Maryam Orders Emergency Drainage Operations

Heavy rain accompanied by a severe hailstorm and strong winds swept across Lahore on Saturday, bringing relief from the intense heat but also causing significant disruption across the city. The sudden change in weather resulted in widespread electricity outages, traffic difficulties, and damage to infrastructure in several areas.

According to official reports, the highest rainfall was recorded in Nishtar Town with 48.5mm of rain, while several other localities including Johar Town, Airport Area, Mughalpura, Lakshmi Chowk, and Upper Mall also received substantial rainfall. The downpour transformed the city’s weather conditions but created challenges for residents due to water accumulation and power interruptions.

The situation became more serious when a wall collapsed on a rickshaw in Wapda Town, injuring two people. Rescue teams responded promptly and shifted one injured individual to the hospital for medical treatment.

In response to the weather emergency, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert throughout the province. She ordered immediate drainage of rainwater, continuous monitoring of stormwater drains, and enhanced supervision of Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) operations to prevent urban flooding.

The chief minister also instructed authorities to closely monitor vulnerable buildings and issue public warnings regarding possible roof collapses. Special attention was directed toward construction sites, canals, drainage channels, and major highways to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during adverse weather conditions.

WASA teams and district administration officials remained active in the field, conducting drainage operations in low-lying areas and major intersections. Disposal stations operated at full capacity while emergency teams worked around the clock to clear accumulated rainwater and respond to citizen complaints.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast additional rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms in parts of Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and the Potohar region over the next 24 hours. Citizens have been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, and follow official safety guidelines.

The latest weather event highlights the importance of effective urban drainage systems and emergency preparedness as changing weather patterns continue to impact major cities across Pakistan.
