Blast in Lakki Marwat Market Kills at Least Nine, Injures 33 in Suspected IED Attack

A powerful explosion in the Sarai Naurang market of Lakki Marwat has killed at least nine people and injured 33 others, according to local officials. The blast occurred in a crowded commercial area, causing widespread panic and significant damage to shops, vehicles, and surrounding infrastructure.

Authorities said the explosion took place at Phatak Chowk in Naurang Bazaar along the GT Road, where a large number of traders, commuters, and shoppers were present at the time of the incident. Among the dead were two traffic police officials who were on duty regulating traffic in the area.

Preliminary investigations suggest that explosive material was planted in a parked motorcycle, indicating a targeted improvised explosive device (IED) attack. Security forces and bomb disposal units immediately reached the scene and began collecting forensic evidence.

Police officials confirmed that the blast resulted in extensive destruction, with rickshaws, shops, and vehicles badly damaged. Emergency services shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, while critically wounded victims were referred to larger medical facilities in Bannu and Peshawar.

The incident follows a recent surge in violence in the region, including a deadly attack on a police checkpoint in Bannu district that killed 15 personnel. Authorities believe the security situation in the area remains highly sensitive.

Funeral prayers for the two slain traffic police officials were held at Police Lines Lakki Marwat, attended by senior officers, government officials, and fellow personnel.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack and expressed grief over the loss of lives. He directed authorities to complete the investigation swiftly and bring those responsible to justice, reaffirming the government’s commitment to eliminating terrorism.

Security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation, and search operations are underway to trace those involved in the attack.
