Pakistan Army Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi has been appointed as the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). The appointment was made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and represents another significant contribution by Pakistan to international peacekeeping efforts.
Major General Qazi brings more than 35 years of military leadership, operational command and international peacekeeping experience to his new assignment. He has also been awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military) for his services.
Throughout his military career, Major General Qazi has served in several senior command, staff and instructional positions in Pakistan and abroad. His previous responsibilities have included serving as General Officer Commanding of an Infantry Division, Force Commander Northern Areas and Director General at the Ministry of Defence.
His experience also includes direct involvement in United Nations peacekeeping operations. Earlier in his career, he served with the United Nations Transitional Administration in Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) in Croatia.
The appointment highlights Pakistan’s longstanding contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions. Pakistan has consistently provided trained military personnel, contingents and senior officers to support international efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability.
Major General Qazi’s new role with MINURSO will further strengthen Pakistan’s presence in international peacekeeping and reflects the country’s continued commitment to supporting global security and stability.
The appointment has been welcomed in Pakistan as an important recognition of the country’s military leadership and its longstanding role in UN peacekeeping operations.
