Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), condemning continued Houthi attacks and calling for an immediate end to hostilities. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reiterated Islamabad’s support for the kingdom under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.
Addressing the Security Council’s monthly briefing on Yemen, Ambassador Ahmad said Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia remained firm in line with the agreement and recent decisions of its Strategic Political and Defence Committee. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Saudi Arabia’s right to defend its people, cities and vital infrastructure.
The Pakistani envoy condemned attacks targeting infrastructure in the Makkah Governorate and the Taibah power distribution station in Madinah. He also recalled attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha International Airport that reportedly caused civilian deaths and injuries. Pakistan called on the Houthi movement to immediately cease attacks and stressed the importance of respecting the security and sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques.
Beyond Saudi Arabia’s security, Ambassador Ahmad reiterated Pakistan’s support for Yemen’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, as well as its internationally recognised government. He expressed concern over the escalation along Yemen’s western coast and near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, urging the Houthis to stop attacks on commercial shipping and respect freedom of navigation under international law.
Pakistan also backed the efforts of UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg to contain the escalation and facilitate a cessation of hostilities. Ambassador Ahmad called for an inclusive political process led and owned by Yemenis under United Nations auspices as a pathway towards a peaceful settlement.
Addressing Yemen’s worsening humanitarian situation, the envoy highlighted risks to civilians and essential infrastructure amid renewed fighting, including around Taiz and following an attack on Aden airport. He called for safe and unhindered humanitarian access, adequate funding for relief operations and the delivery of food, fuel and essential commercial supplies to people in need.
Pakistan further called for the immediate, unconditional and safe release of detained UN, humanitarian and diplomatic personnel. Ambassador Ahmad urged the Security Council to act collectively to address the attacks, protect regional security, ease humanitarian suffering and support lasting peace in Yemen.
