Pakistan urges US and Iran to continue peace talks under Islamabad MoU

Pakistan has urged the United States and Iran to remain committed to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and continue diplomatic engagement to prevent further regional tensions and promote lasting peace.

Speaking during a session of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed concern over the growing tensions between Tehran and Washington. He warned that any further escalation could negatively affect regional and global peace and security.

The ambassador urged both countries to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts. He emphasized that dialogue and negotiations remain the most effective means of resolving disputes, including the long-standing concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.

Asim Iftikhar Ahmad described the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a practical framework for addressing differences between the two countries. He said the agreement provides an opportunity to build confidence, reduce tensions, and strengthen regional stability through peaceful negotiations.

He stressed that both Iran and the United States should fulfil their commitments under the agreement, adding that continued diplomatic engagement would help foster mutual trust, respect, and cooperation.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that Iran had requested Washington to continue negotiations and that the United States had agreed to resume talks. The development has renewed hopes that diplomatic channels will remain open despite recent tensions.

Pakistan reiterated its support for peaceful conflict resolution and called on all parties to prioritise dialogue over confrontation to ensure regional and international stability.
