Pakistan and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation during high-level talks held in Islamabad, focusing on counter-terrorism, anti-narcotics efforts, and regional stability.
The meeting took place between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur. Acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, and the federal interior secretary also attended the discussions.
According to official sources, both sides reviewed bilateral relations and exchanged views on enhancing cooperation in key security domains. The dialogue covered joint efforts to tackle terrorism, drug trafficking, and other transnational challenges that require coordinated responses.
During the meeting, Mohsin Naqvi described Pakistan-US relations as being based on mutual trust and constructive engagement. He noted that bilateral ties had gained renewed momentum in recent years and expressed optimism about further strengthening cooperation.
A significant focus of the talks was the security of foreign investments, particularly the Reko Diq project in Balochistan. The interior minister assured the US delegation that comprehensive security arrangements were in place to protect American companies involved in the project.
Reko Diq is considered one of the world’s largest untapped copper and gold reserves and has attracted major international investment. The project is expected to play a key role in Pakistan’s economic development, with commercial production anticipated to begin in the coming years.
The Pakistani side also expressed interest in the early restoration of direct flight operations between Pakistan and the United States, highlighting the importance of improving connectivity for trade and people-to-people engagement.
Regional developments, including the evolving situation in the Middle East, were also discussed during the meeting. Naqvi emphasised the need for peaceful resolution of ongoing tensions, while the US side acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting dialogue and stability in the region.
The discussions reflect a shared commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation and addressing common challenges through partnership. Officials from both sides underscored the importance of continued engagement to ensure regional peace, economic growth, and enhanced security collaboration.
