PDMA issues GLOF alert for upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of an increased risk of flash floods due to heavy rainfall and accelerated glacier melting.

According to the authority, widespread rainfall is expected across northern parts of the province from July 19 to July 25, raising concerns about flooding in mountainous areas and communities located near rivers and streams.

PDMA officials warned that persistent rainfall could accelerate the melting of glaciers, increasing the likelihood of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Such events can trigger sudden and powerful flash floods that pose serious risks to downstream settlements, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

The alert has been issued for Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Bahrain, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra, where district administrations have been directed to remain on high alert throughout the forecast period.

Authorities have been instructed to closely monitor weather conditions, glacier-fed lakes, rivers, and streams while activating emergency response plans and ensuring effective coordination among all relevant departments.

PDMA also warned that heavy rainfall could significantly raise river water levels, increasing the risk of overflowing streams, landslides, and damage to roads, bridges, homes, and other public infrastructure in vulnerable areas.

Rescue and emergency response agencies have been directed to remain fully prepared. Heavy machinery, trained personnel, rescue equipment, and relief supplies have been placed on standby to ensure a swift response in case of any emergency.

The authority has urged residents of vulnerable areas to remain cautious, stay updated through official weather advisories, and follow instructions issued by local administrations to minimize risks during the forecast period.
