Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the start of subsidy distribution through digital wallets for public transport and freight operators, aiming to provide fast and transparent financial relief during the ongoing fuel crisis.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, subsidies are now being directly transferred to operators of buses, wagons, trucks, and freight vehicles using a digital system. This initiative is designed to ensure efficient delivery of funds while minimizing delays and improving transparency.
The prime minister emphasized that supporting economically vulnerable groups remains a top priority. He stated that funds saved through austerity measures are being redirected toward public welfare to ease the burden caused by rising fuel prices.
During a high-level meeting, officials briefed the premier on petroleum reserves and confirmed that sufficient supplies are available to meet national demand. Updates were also shared on the implementation of relief measures introduced after the recent surge in fuel prices.
As part of the relief package, diesel-dependent transport vehicles will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per litre, with monthly reviews planned. Additionally, financial assistance includes Rs70,000 per month for small trucks, Rs80,000 for larger freight vehicles, and Rs100,000 for inter-city public transport buses.
The move aims to prevent an increase in transport fares and stabilize the cost of essential goods, which are largely transported through these vehicles across the country.
The digital wallet system represents a modern approach to subsidy distribution, ensuring that assistance reaches beneficiaries quickly and securely. This initiative is part of broader government efforts to manage the economic impact of rising global fuel prices and maintain stability.
