PM Shehbaz Sharif to attend Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral during Iran-Türkiye visit

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is departing on a five-day official visit to Iran and Türkiye, beginning with his participation in the funeral prayers and final rites of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.

The prime minister will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, members of the federal cabinet, and a high-level delegation. During his stay in Iran, Shehbaz Sharif is expected to express Pakistan’s condolences and reaffirm the country’s solidarity with Iran while emphasizing Islamabad’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

A separate Pakistani delegation, led by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, has already arrived in Tehran. The delegation includes Faisal Karim Kundi, Liaquat Baloch, and representatives from various political and religious parties, reflecting Pakistan’s broad representation at the state funeral.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has also reached Tehran, where he was received by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni ahead of the official ceremonies.

According to Iranian authorities, a seven-day national mourning period is currently underway following the passing of Ayatollah Khamenei. Representatives and dignitaries from more than 100 countries are expected to attend the funeral and related ceremonies, which will conclude with his burial in Mashhad on July 9.

Following his engagements in Iran, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Türkiye for high-level meetings with Turkish leaders. The discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, trade and investment, regional security, economic cooperation, and other issues of mutual interest.

The visit highlights Pakistan’s continued diplomatic engagement with both Iran and Türkiye and reflects Islamabad’s efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships, enhance regional cooperation, and promote peace and stability across the region.
