The Punjab government has capped the increase in public transport fares, rejecting a higher proposal and setting strict limits to protect commuters from excessive charges.
According to official notifications, fare increases for diesel-based public transport, including both AC and non-AC vehicles, will not exceed 25%, while petrol-based vehicles will see a maximum increase of 10%. The decision was taken following recent fluctuations in fuel prices and directives from provincial authorities.
Earlier, the Regional Transport Authority had proposed fare hikes ranging between 25% and 37%. However, after a reduction in petroleum prices by the federal government, the Punjab administration revised the proposed increase and introduced lower caps.
Authorities clarified that these percentages represent upper limits only and should not be applied uniformly across all routes. Transporters have been strictly instructed not to charge fares beyond the approved limits under any circumstances.
The government has also ordered immediate revision of fare charts that exceed the prescribed limits. Updated fare tables must be clearly displayed at bus stands and booking points to ensure transparency for passengers.
To enforce compliance, assistant commissioners, traffic police, and other enforcement staff have been tasked with monitoring transport operations. Strict action will be taken against any operator found overcharging passengers.
In addition, officials confirmed that metro bus and electric bus services have been made free for a limited period, providing temporary relief to the public.
This move reflects the government’s effort to balance rising operational costs with public affordability while ensuring strict enforcement against violations.
