ISLAMABAD: Heavy rainfall brought relief from the recent heatwave in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, making the weather cooler and more pleasant while prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to remain on high alert.
The twin cities received a combined 45 millimetres of rain, with several areas recording significant rainfall. Saidpur received 15mm, while Golra recorded 36mm, Bokra 42mm, Pirodhai 34mm, New Katarian 36mm and Shamsabad 35mm.
Following the downpour, WASA activated emergency arrangements in Rawalpindi. Engineers were deployed around Nullah Lai and other low-lying areas to monitor water levels and respond quickly to any threat of urban flooding. Heavy machinery was also kept ready for the swift drainage of accumulated rainwater.
According to WASA officials, the water level in Nullah Lai at Katarian reached 8.5 feet, while the level near Gawalmandi Bridge was recorded at around five feet.
Authorities directed field teams to maintain close monitoring of drainage channels and vulnerable locations as further rainfall remains possible. Residents have also been advised to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
The latest spell of rain provided temporary relief from hot and humid weather across several areas. However, heavy showers also disrupted electricity supplies in parts of the region, leaving some residents without power.
Rain accompanied by thunder and lightning was reported in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, while strong showers were also recorded in Swat and Malakand. Authorities advised people living along the Swat River to move to safer locations as a precaution against rising water levels.
Citizens have been urged to avoid rivers, streams and other waterways during periods of heavy rainfall because of the risk of sudden increases in water levels.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also forecast additional rain in upper parts of the country, particularly the Potohar region and Islamabad. According to its weather advisory, monsoon currents are affecting the upper areas, while a westerly wave is expected to strengthen and influence weather conditions.
Further rain and thundershowers, including isolated heavy falls, are expected in parts of Kashmir and other upper regions, with weather conditions likely to remain unsettled.
Authorities are continuing to monitor rainfall, drainage systems and water levels in vulnerable areas to minimise the risk of flooding and ensure timely emergency response.
