Sindh Minister Urges Heritage Protection on World Heritage Day, Highlights Mohenjo-daro and Makli

Sindh has renewed its commitment to preserving cultural heritage as Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah called for collective efforts on World Heritage Day to safeguard the province’s historical legacy.

In his message, the minister highlighted that Sindh is home to some of the world’s oldest civilisations and stressed the importance of protecting its archaeological and cultural assets for future generations. He specifically pointed to iconic heritage sites such as Mohenjo-daro and Makli Necropolis, describing them as symbols of identity and pride.

The provincial government continues to prioritise the restoration and conservation of historic landmarks, including forts, shrines and archaeological sites. Authorities are also working to upgrade facilities at these locations to meet international standards and promote tourism across the region.

The minister noted that collaboration with international archaeologists is ongoing to further explore and preserve Sindh’s rich history. Educational initiatives are also being introduced to help younger generations connect with their cultural roots and understand the importance of heritage conservation.

Highlighting cultural milestones, the minister mentioned the inclusion of the traditional musical instrument Borundo in UNESCO’s cultural listings as a significant achievement for the province. This recognition reflects Sindh’s diverse cultural heritage and its global relevance.

Observed every year on April 18, World Heritage Day—established by UNESCO—aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural heritage worldwide.

The minister emphasised that protecting heritage is a shared responsibility and requires collective efforts from government institutions, communities and individuals alike. His message reinforced the need to ensure that Sindh’s rich historical and cultural legacy is preserved and passed on to future generations.
