Islamabad is set to play a major role in Pakistan’s emerging medical tourism sector as the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) accelerates plans for a luxury medical tourism model centre in the federal capital.
The proposed project aims to attract international patients by combining specialised medical services with five-star hospitality. The initiative could initially introduce premium “Med Suites” before expanding into a dedicated medical tourism centre and eventually an Islamabad Medical City.
The proposal was presented by plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr Muhammad Salman Khan, who sought land or a built-up facility for a five-star medical centre. The project is expected to focus initially on high-demand areas such as cosmetic surgery and dentistry, while also exploring broader medical tourism opportunities.
Officials believe Pakistan has several advantages in the international medical tourism market, including lower treatment costs, qualified medical professionals and a large overseas Pakistani community. Islamabad’s security, infrastructure and environment have also been identified as factors that could make the city attractive to international patients and their families.
The SIFC has directed relevant institutions, including the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and medical experts, to examine the proposal and prepare feasibility studies. Discussions with major hotels in Islamabad are also expected to explore potential partnerships for medical tourism facilities.
If implemented successfully, the initiative could attract foreign patients, generate foreign exchange and establish Islamabad as a competitive destination in the global medical tourism industry.
