Heavy rainfall in northern Pakistan triggered landslides and mudflows that blocked the Karakoram Highway at multiple locations, severely disrupting traffic and transport operations in the region.
According to officials from the National Highway Authority, the highway has been completely closed for all types of traffic between Boshidas and Tatta Pani after large amounts of debris and mudslides covered the road.
The closure has created major difficulties for passengers, transporters and freight vehicles travelling through the affected mountainous areas. Authorities said emergency teams and heavy machinery were immediately dispatched to the blocked sections to begin restoration work.
Officials confirmed that clearance operations are continuing on a priority basis to remove mud, rocks and other debris from the highway. However, ongoing rainfall and unstable weather conditions are slowing down efforts to fully reopen the road.
The Karakoram Highway is considered one of Pakistan’s most important mountain routes, connecting several northern regions and serving as a vital trade and travel corridor. Weather-related disruptions along the highway often affect tourism, local transportation and supply chains in Gilgit-Baltistan and surrounding areas.
Travellers have been advised to avoid unnecessary journeys and stay updated on road conditions before travelling toward northern regions. Authorities also urged the public to follow official advisories as rain-related emergencies continue in different parts of the country.
The latest disruption highlights the increasing vulnerability of mountainous roads to extreme weather conditions, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and landslide activity in northern Pakistan.
