Maryam Nawaz Sets June Deadline for Punjab Drainage Projects Before Monsoon

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities to complete all drainage and sewerage projects across the province before June, ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. The move aims to strengthen urban infrastructure and prevent flooding in major cities during heavy rains.

During a high-level meeting, the chief minister instructed departments to ensure round-the-clock work on all ongoing schemes. The projects are currently underway in 15 cities, including Sargodha, Dera Ghazi Khan, Gujrat, Okara, Jhang, Multan, Sialkot, Jhelum, Hafizabad, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, and Rawalpindi.

Officials informed the meeting that the development plan includes the installation of 2,265 kilometres of sewerage pipelines and 189 kilometres of rainwater drainage lines. In the first phase, 86 disposal stations and nine underground storage tanks will be constructed to manage water flow effectively.

Additionally, 752 kilometres of roads will be developed following the completion of drainage and sewerage systems, contributing to improved urban mobility and infrastructure.

The meeting also approved the design of Water and Sewerage Agency (WASA) complexes in all 15 cities. These facilities will include modern operational units and hostel accommodations for staff, ensuring better management and maintenance of services.

Authorities are using a digital dashboard and mobile application to monitor project progress in real time, ensuring transparency and efficiency. The chief minister also directed WASA to launch a comprehensive desilting campaign to clear drains before the monsoon season begins.

This initiative reflects the government’s proactive approach to tackling urban flooding and improving sanitation systems across Punjab, aiming to provide long-term relief to citizens during seasonal rains.
