Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for an official two-day visit, marking the first visit by a Norwegian foreign minister to Pakistan in 10 years. The visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to diplomatic and economic relations between Pakistan and Norway.
Eide is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. He was received at Islamabad International Airport by Additional Foreign Secretary for Europe Ambassador Ayesha Ali before holding a meeting with Dar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the Norwegian foreign minister’s visit will include delegation-level talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and identifying new areas of mutual interest.
Trade and investment, climate change, renewable energy and education are expected to be among the major areas discussed during the visit. The two sides will also explore opportunities to increase people-to-people contacts and expand cooperation in areas of shared interest.
The visit comes as Pakistan seeks to strengthen economic and diplomatic partnerships with European countries. Cooperation with Norway could provide opportunities in clean energy, sustainable development, investment and education.
The two countries are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments. Recent high-level contacts, including telephone conversations between Ishaq Dar and Eide and the visit of Norwegian State Secretary Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik to Islamabad, have helped maintain diplomatic engagement.
For Pakistan, the visit offers an opportunity to deepen relations with Norway and attract greater cooperation in emerging economic sectors. For Norway, it provides an opportunity to strengthen engagement with Pakistan and expand bilateral ties beyond traditional areas of cooperation.
The Norwegian foreign minister’s arrival marks an important diplomatic development, with attention now focused on the outcome of the talks and whether the visit leads to concrete initiatives in trade, investment, renewable energy and other sectors.
