QUETTA: Onion prices have surged in Quetta, with the vegetable becoming Rs40 per kilogram more expensive in the city’s markets amid pressure on available supplies.
Market sources said onions that were previously selling for around Rs160 per kilogram are now being sold for as much as Rs200 per kilogram in several parts of Quetta. In some areas, retailers are charging between Rs220 and Rs250 per kilogram, with prices varying depending on local supply and market conditions.
Traders attributed the recent increase mainly to the delayed arrival of the new onion crop. As fresh supplies have yet to reach markets in sufficient quantities, existing stocks have come under pressure, resulting in higher prices.
Demand for onions has remained steady because the vegetable is a basic ingredient in everyday cooking. Households, restaurants and hotels use onions extensively in a variety of dishes, keeping demand high even when market supplies are limited.
The price increase has added to concerns among consumers already dealing with higher costs for several essential kitchen items. Buyers say increases in frequently used vegetables can place additional pressure on household budgets.
However, traders expect the situation to improve once the new onion crop reaches Quetta markets in greater quantities. Increased supplies could ease pressure on existing stocks and help bring prices closer to previous levels.
Traders have also advised consumers not to panic over the current increase, saying the price rise is expected to ease as fresh supplies become available. Improved market availability could help stabilize onion prices and provide some relief to consumers in the coming days.
