ISLAMABAD: The federal government has approved amendments to the National Electricity Plan 2023–2027 as part of efforts to improve the country’s power sector and ensure affordable and reliable electricity for consumers.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy, where officials reviewed the financial position of the electricity industry and the implementation of the existing national electricity plan.
During the meeting, the Power Division presented proposed amendments to the National Electricity Plan 2023–2027. After reviewing the proposals, the committee approved the changes aimed at strengthening the energy framework and improving electricity supply at reasonable prices.
The committee also directed relevant authorities to hold further consultations with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) before proceeding with the proposed measures.
Officials briefed the meeting on the challenges facing Pakistan’s power sector and highlighted the need for coordinated planning to improve its financial sustainability.
The government also stressed the importance of developing an integrated energy strategy that can benefit consumers while addressing broader challenges within the electricity market.
The approved amendments are expected to provide a revised framework for the power sector and support improvements in efficiency, affordability and long-term planning.
The move comes as the government continues efforts to address financial and operational challenges in the electricity sector while working toward a more reliable and sustainable power supply system.
