M-13 Motorway Project Set to Transform Travel Between Kharian and Rawalpindi

Pakistan has taken another major step toward strengthening its transport infrastructure with continued progress on the M-13 Motorway Project, a development expected to significantly improve travel between Kharian and Rawalpindi.

Supported through the institutional coordination of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the motorway is designed to reduce the travel distance by nearly 100 kilometers, providing commuters with a faster, safer, and more efficient alternative to the existing route.

The project includes upgrading the current road into a 117.2-kilometer six-lane motorway, creating a modern high-speed transport corridor that will enhance mobility for passengers and commercial vehicles alike.

According to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, the SIFC also played a vital role in reviving the previously stalled M-12 Sialkot–Kharian Motorway project. Meanwhile, the M-11 Lahore–Sialkot Motorway is being expanded from four lanes to six to accommodate the growing volume of traffic.

Officials believe that once the M-11, M-12, and M-13 motorway corridor is fully completed, nearly 50 to 60 percent of the traffic currently using the M-2 Motorway between Lahore and Rawalpindi will shift to the new route. This is expected to reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency, and lower transportation costs.

The motorway project will also strengthen regional trade by improving connectivity between Lahore, Sialkot, Islamabad, Peshawar, Afghanistan, China, and Central Asia, making it an important component of Pakistan’s long-term economic development strategy.

One of the most significant features of the project is the construction of three tunnels at Kallar Kahar, an area known for frequent road accidents. These tunnels are expected to improve road safety, reduce accident rates, and ensure smoother travel for motorists.

The M-13 Motorway is considered one of Pakistan’s most important infrastructure projects, reflecting the government’s continued focus on modern transportation networks, economic growth, and regional connectivity.
