Punjab Braces For Severe Heatwave During Eid-ul-Adha Holidays

Punjab is expected to experience an intense heatwave during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha holidays, with temperatures forecast to rise significantly above seasonal averages across multiple regions.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), temperatures in several parts of Punjab may remain 4 to 7 degrees Celsius higher than normal over the coming days, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses and dehydration.

The PDMA warned that southern districts of Punjab could face extremely harsh conditions, with temperatures potentially reaching close to 50°C. Major urban centres such as Lahore are also expected to experience soaring temperatures of around 42°C, along with hot and humid conditions persisting even during nighttime hours.

In response to the forecast, PDMA Director General issued precautionary guidelines advising citizens to limit outdoor activities, especially between 10am and 5pm when heat intensity is expected to peak.

Authorities have urged residents to stay hydrated, wear light and loose clothing, and protect themselves from direct sunlight by covering their heads when outdoors.

Special instructions have also been issued for Eid-related arrangements, particularly at cattle markets across the province. Officials have directed that adequate shaded areas and clean drinking water be ensured for traders, buyers, and livestock to reduce the impact of extreme heat.

The PDMA further advised butchers, labourers, traders, and sanitation workers involved in Eid duties to take extra precautions while working under direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure may lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke.

Health experts have also cautioned that vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, should remain indoors as much as possible during peak heat hours.

Citizens have been encouraged to stay updated with official weather advisories and follow safety instructions issued by authorities. In case of emergencies, the PDMA helpline 1129 will remain available for assistance.

The alert highlights growing concerns over extreme weather patterns during peak summer months in Pakistan, particularly during major public holidays such as Eid-ul-Adha.
