KARACHI / LAHORE / ISLAMABAD / GILGIT:
At least 19 people were killed and dozens injured in violent protests that erupted across several Pakistani cities following widespread reports of a US-Israeli strike targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Authorities confirmed fatalities in Karachi (10), Gilgit (7), and Islamabad (2), as demonstrations escalated into clashes with law enforcement near sensitive installations, including the United States Consulate in Karachi and areas surrounding the Diplomatic Enclave in Islamabad.
Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi urged citizens to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
“Today is a sorrowful day for the Muslim Ummah. We share the grief, but protests must remain peaceful,” he said in a video statement, appealing for restraint nationwide.
Karachi Sees Deadliest Clashes
The most severe unrest occurred near the US Consulate on Mai Kolachi Road in Karachi, where protesters breached security barriers. Police responded with teargas and baton charges after stone-pelting incidents were reported.
Health officials confirmed 62 injuries linked to the consulate-area clashes alone, with several individuals reported in critical condition. Section 144 was extended across Sindh, banning public gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, and display of weapons for one month.
Islamabad and Lahore Under Tight Security
In Islamabad, clashes near the Diplomatic Enclave resulted in two deaths and over 30 injuries. Authorities sealed routes to the Red Zone, enforcing restrictions under Section 144.
In Lahore, demonstrators gathered outside the US Consulate, prompting a seven-day ban on public assemblies across Punjab. Law enforcement deployed additional personnel to sensitive locations.
Gilgit-Baltistan Imposes Curfew
In Gilgit and Skardu, protests turned destructive, with reports of buildings set ablaze and major highways blocked. Seven deaths were reported in Gilgit, while authorities imposed a curfew in parts of the region. Security forces were deployed under constitutional provisions to restore order.
Government Announces Inquiry
The Sindh government announced the formation of a high-level Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to review the circumstances surrounding the Karachi incident and determine responsibility.
Officials reiterated that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, vandalism and violence would not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Islamabad advised American citizens in Pakistan to avoid large gatherings and monitor local news.
Authorities across the country remain on high alert as tensions continue, with calls from religious and political leaders urging restraint to prevent further loss of life
