Restoration efforts at Lahore’s iconic heritage sites are making significant progress as authorities work to preserve the city’s rich cultural and architectural legacy. The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), in collaboration with the Aga Khan Cultural Service – Pakistan (AKCS-P), is actively restoring major historic landmarks, including the Wazir Khan Mosque, Lahore Fort, and Shahi Hammam.
Lahore, known as Pakistan’s cultural capital, is home to centuries-old Mughal-era architecture that reflects intricate craftsmanship and artistic brilliance. These historic sites feature detailed frescoes, carved jaalis, jharokas, and decorative elements that define the city’s identity.
Due to years of neglect, many of these structures had suffered serious deterioration. However, restoration teams comprising skilled architects, artists, and craftsmen are now reviving these monuments using traditional techniques such as fresco painting, stucco work, and filigree restoration.
At the Wazir Khan Mosque, extensive work is underway, including structural reinforcement of domes and walls, floor repairs, and restoration of lime plaster and frescoes. Surrounding areas, including Chowk Wazir Khan, are also being rehabilitated to enhance the site’s appeal as a vibrant cultural and tourist destination.
Meanwhile, conservation efforts at Lahore Fort continue with support from international partners like Agence Française de Développement (AFD). Key projects include restoration of the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) and the historic Picture Wall. Advanced techniques such as grouting are being used to stabilize structures, while traditional mirror-making methods have been revived to maintain authenticity.
The near completion of the Picture Wall restoration marks a major milestone in preserving one of the world’s largest mural walls. These initiatives not only safeguard Pakistan’s heritage but also promote tourism and sustainable urban development.
Authorities have also expressed plans to expand such collaborations to other cities across Pakistan, ensuring the preservation of historic landmarks nationwide.
