FAISALABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is set to launch a major urban transport initiative in Faisalabad, as preparations for the 21.3-kilometer Orange Line Metro/Tram corridor reach their final stage. The groundbreaking ceremony is expected shortly after Eid.
The ambitious project will run from Faisal Town on Jaranwala Road to Tahir Pura on Jhang Road. Officials describe it as a transformative step toward modernizing public transportation in Faisalabad, one of Punjab’s largest industrial hubs.
A high-level review meeting was recently held to assess progress on the project. The meeting was chaired by Member of the Punjab Mass Transit Authority and former Chief Secretary Punjab, Captain (Retired) Zahid Saeed, along with Divisional Commissioner Raja Jahangir Anwar. Senior administrative officials and representatives from relevant departments were also present.
Rs80 Billion Project Approved
Officials confirmed that the project’s PC-I, with an estimated cost of Rs80 billion, has received formal approval.
The Orange Line corridor will include:
-
21 modern stations
-
2 depots
-
6 designated U-turn points to improve traffic management
The system is planned to operate with a fleet of 27 metro buses and two trams. The initiative aims to provide an efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly commuting option for thousands of daily passengers.
Authorities believe the project will significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve connectivity across the city, and contribute to Faisalabad’s urban development.
