Religious scholar Muhammad Taqi Usmani on Friday issued a public clarification and apology after acknowledging that he had been misled by a video claiming that Israel and India had reached an agreement to provide aid to Afghanistan.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Usmani explained that during his weekly address he had referred to a circulating video alleging cooperation between Israel and India to assist Afghanistan. However, he later discovered that the footage was fabricated.
Expressing regret over the error, he sought forgiveness for citing unverified content. He further clarified that the full written version of his speech was being released with the disputed segment removed and additional clarification included to prevent misunderstanding.
The development comes amid growing concerns about the rapid spread of misinformation on social media platforms, particularly regarding sensitive regional geopolitical issues.
As of now, there has been no official response from authorities in India, Israel, or Afghanistan regarding the claim mentioned in the original video.
Observers note that the incident highlights the importance of verifying digital content before public dissemination, especially in matters involving international relations and diplomatic sensitivities.
