Pakistan Raises $507 Million in 5G Spectrum Auction as Jazz, Ufone and Zong Secure Frequencies

Pakistan has successfully raised $507 million in its highly anticipated 5G spectrum auction, marking a major milestone for the country’s digital transformation and future connectivity.

The auction was organized by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and concluded after three rounds of competitive bidding. A total of 480 MHz of spectrum was sold out of the 597 MHz that was initially offered.

Three major telecom operators—Jazz, Ufone, and Zong—secured spectrum frequencies that will allow them to roll out next-generation 5G mobile services across the country.

The results of the auction were officially announced by PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman during a ceremony attended by Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Information Minister Atta Tarar, and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.

According to PTA officials, the auction included multiple frequency bands. These included two lots in the 700 MHz band, all five lots in the 2300 MHz band, all nineteen lots in the 2600 MHz band, and twenty-two out of twenty-eight lots in the 3500 MHz band.

Among the telecom operators, Jazz emerged as the largest buyer, securing a total of 190 MHz of spectrum. Its acquisitions included 50 MHz in the 3500 MHz band, 70 MHz in the 2600 MHz band, 50 MHz in the 2300 MHz band, and 20 MHz in the 700 MHz band.

Ufone secured 180 MHz of spectrum, including 120 MHz in the 3500 MHz band and 60 MHz in the 2600 MHz band. Meanwhile, Zong obtained 110 MHz of spectrum during the auction.

The assignment stage, where operators will receive their specific frequency placements within each band, is scheduled to take place on March 12, 2026.

Speaking at the ceremony, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja described the successful auction as a historic milestone for Pakistan’s digital future. She stated that the release of additional spectrum will significantly improve internet quality and connectivity across the country.

The minister also highlighted that the spectrum auction process was conducted live to ensure transparency, following directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Officials noted that Pakistan had reached a critical point in spectrum availability, and the newly released bandwidth will help telecom operators expand network capacity and improve service quality.

The government expects 5G services to initially launch in five major cities by the end of the year. Consumers may begin experiencing improved mobile internet speeds within the coming months as telecom operators start upgrading their network infrastructure.

Experts believe that the introduction of 5G technology will greatly enhance Pakistan’s digital ecosystem. It is expected to support sectors such as online education, remote work, e-commerce, telemedicine, and smart technologies.

The successful spectrum auction is therefore seen as a crucial step in strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy and boosting growth in the IT and telecommunications sectors.
