Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the upcoming US–Iran negotiations in Islamabad as a “make-or-break” moment, highlighting Pakistan’s growing role in global diplomacy and peacebuilding. In a televised address, the prime minister urged the nation to pray for the success of these high-stakes talks, which aim to transform a fragile ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement.
The negotiations come after weeks of intense conflict in the Gulf region, which began on February 28 following joint US–Israeli strikes on Iran. The escalation disrupted global energy markets and key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. However, diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan and its regional partners helped secure a temporary two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that dialogue has now replaced the language of war, marking a historic turning point. He credited Pakistan’s leadership, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir, for their critical role in bringing both sides to the negotiating table.
Pakistan’s initiative to host these talks has been widely seen as a proud moment for the country and the Muslim world. The government has also facilitated visa-on-arrival for delegates and journalists, ensuring smooth participation in what is being called the “Islamabad Talks 2026.”
Senior officials from both countries, including US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, have arrived in Islamabad to take part in the negotiations. Both sides have expressed cautious optimism, with hopes pinned on achieving a long-term ceasefire and addressing key issues such as sanctions, maritime security, and regional stability.
Despite the progress, the prime minister acknowledged that the real challenge lies ahead. Converting the temporary ceasefire into a sustainable peace framework will require continued diplomatic engagement and mutual trust.
This historic moment not only underscores Pakistan’s diplomatic importance on the global stage but also represents a critical opportunity to bring lasting peace to a region long affected by conflict.
