President Asif Ali Zardari has called on citizens across Pakistan to participate in Earth Hour by switching off their lights for one hour, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
In his official message, the president highlighted that climate change is one of the most pressing global issues, and Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to its impacts. He urged individuals, communities, and institutions to play their role in reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable practices.
Zardari described Earth Hour as a powerful symbolic initiative that raises awareness about environmental protection. He stated that while turning off lights for one hour may seem small, it sends a strong message about the need for responsible energy use and environmental consciousness.
The president also pointed to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Pakistan, including devastating floods, rising temperatures, heatwaves, and prolonged droughts. These challenges, he said, are putting immense pressure on the country’s infrastructure, water resources, and power systems.
He stressed that urban areas are particularly affected, where rising temperatures lead to higher electricity demand, further burdening the national grid. Additionally, water scarcity and unpredictable weather patterns continue to threaten agriculture and livelihoods.
Encouraging long-term change, President Zardari urged citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits beyond Earth Hour, such as reducing electricity consumption, conserving water, and supporting sustainable initiatives.
Earth Hour is observed globally as a reminder that small actions can lead to meaningful change. The president’s message reinforces Pakistan’s commitment to environmental protection and highlights the urgent need for unity in tackling climate-related challenges.
