The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning about increased risks of floods and landslides in northern areas of Pakistan from April 1 to 10.
According to the advisory, vulnerable regions in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may experience glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), flash floods, mudslides, and landslides due to expected weather conditions.
The authority highlighted that temperatures in the northern mountainous regions have remained above normal in recent days, increasing the likelihood of glacier melting and sudden water surges. Areas near glacier termini are considered particularly at risk.
The warning also emphasizes concerns for communities living in high-risk mountainous zones, where changing weather patterns can lead to sudden natural hazards.
NDMA has urged federal and provincial authorities, as well as district administrations, to take precautionary measures to protect lives and infrastructure. Emergency preparedness and timely response have been stressed as key factors in managing potential disasters.
Local communities have also been advised to remain alert during this period and avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas.
The advisory reflects growing concerns over climate-related risks in Pakistan’s northern regions, where extreme weather events are becoming more frequent.
