KARACHI: In a city long burdened by traffic congestion, experts suggest that smart planning and effective traffic management offer more sustainable solutions than constructing flyovers and underpasses.
For years, large infrastructure projects have been presented as the primary answer to Karachi’s traffic challenges. However, traffic engineering specialists argue that better signal coordination, well-planned diversions, and scientific traffic flow management can significantly ease congestion without heavy construction costs.
A notable example is the Guru Mandir roundabout. Decades ago, authorities considered building a flyover at the busy intersection. Instead, a simple diversion plan was introduced nearly 30 years ago. Since then, traffic flow at the junction has remained comparatively smooth, demonstrating that strategic planning can outperform expensive infrastructure projects.
Urban planners believe that instead of investing billions in concrete structures, authorities should prioritize intelligent traffic systems, synchronized signals, improved road markings, and better enforcement. Such measures not only save public funds but also minimize environmental disruption and construction-related inconvenience.
As Karachi continues to expand, experts emphasize that sustainable urban mobility depends on thoughtful planning rather than reactive construction.
