The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of a possible development of El Niño in May, with a 61% probability between May and July. This shift in climate patterns could lead to higher temperatures, reduced rainfall, and prolonged dry conditions across Pakistan.
Alongside this, the PMD has issued a heatwave alert for southern regions, predicting a low-intensity heatwave from April 29 to May 3. Temperatures in some areas may rise up to 52°C, particularly affecting southern Punjab, upper Sindh, and southeastern Balochistan.
El Niño is part of the broader El Niño-Southern Oscillation system, which significantly influences global weather patterns. Experts warn that its development may result in weaker winds, below-normal rainfall, and possible drought-like conditions in vulnerable regions.
Meanwhile, upper areas of the country are expected to receive temporary relief due to incoming western weather systems, which may lower temperatures slightly. However, with climate indicators already showing rising trends, authorities caution that Pakistan could be heading toward a hotter-than-usual summer season.
The PMD has assured that the situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be issued if weather conditions intensify.
