Karachi Oil Spill: NRL Pipeline Bursts in DHA Phase VI

A Karachi oil spill occurred in DHA Phase VI after a crude oil pipeline operated by National Refinery Limited (NRL) burst on Khayaban-e-Sehar, Street 13. The pipeline, which carries crude oil from Keamari to Korangi, reportedly runs through the road median.

The incident occurred around 10:30pm on Saturday, causing crude oil to spread onto the road and prompting authorities to restrict access to the affected area as a precautionary measure.

NRL’s response team reached the site around midnight and began containment and cleanup operations. Specialised spill kits were used to collect the leaked oil, with more than 20 drums reportedly filled during the initial response.

Excavation work was also launched to locate the damaged section of the underground pipeline and stop the leakage completely. The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency directed authorities to safely remove contaminated soil, sand and sludge and dispose of the material in accordance with environmental regulations.

Officials have advised residents to stay away from the affected area and avoid smoking or using open flames near the spilled crude oil. Residents have also been warned against attempting to clean the oil themselves or washing it into nearby drainage systems.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation while repair, containment and environmental cleanup operations remain underway.
