Pakistan Condemns Deadly Jordan Church Attack That Killed Seven

Pakistan has strongly condemned a deadly gun attack on a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan that killed at least seven people and injured 34 others. Islamabad expressed solidarity with Jordan and offered condolences to the families of those killed.

According to Jordanian authorities, the shooting occurred on Friday, October 23, in the village of Hammoud in Karak Governorate. Armed men reportedly stepped out of a vehicle and opened fire on mourners gathered for a funeral procession at the church compound.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office condemned the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, describing it as a terrorist attack and reiterating Pakistan’s opposition to terrorism in all its forms. Islamabad also wished a speedy recovery to those injured and expressed support for the Jordanian people.

Jordan’s Public Security Directorate initially reported six deaths before Director of Public Security Major General Abdullah Al-Maaytah confirmed that the death toll had risen to seven. Of the 34 injured, 27 were reportedly still receiving medical treatment, according to figures cited in the report.

Witness accounts indicated that the gunmen fired for several minutes before fleeing the scene. Jordanian security agencies launched a search operation to locate the suspects and investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II vowed a firm response against those responsible and stressed that threats to the country’s security would be met with strong action. He also visited Karak on Friday evening, according to footage broadcast by Jordan’s state television channel Al-Mamlaka.

Pakistan’s condemnation highlights its support for Jordan as authorities continue efforts to identify and apprehend the suspected attackers. The investigation remains focused on bringing those responsible to justice while medical teams continue treating the injured.
