16 Children Shifted to Protection Centre After Multan Incident

Punjab’s Child Protection and Welfare Bureau (CPWB) has taken 16 minor children into protective custody from an orphanage in Multan and transferred them to its local protection centre to ensure their safety and well-being. The move was carried out on Wednesday following a recent incident in the city.

According to the bureau, Chairperson Sarah Ahmed directed a team to visit the facility and relocate the children to a safer environment where their care, supervision and protection could be ensured. The action has renewed attention to the oversight of residential childcare institutions and the safeguards required for children living in such facilities.

The bureau stated that the orphanage’s application for registration with CPWB had been rejected. However, the facility was registered with the Punjab Charity Commission. In response, the bureau approached the commission, seeking a review of the facility’s registration and appropriate action under the law.

CPWB has also written to the relevant authorities, requesting police action against the orphanage. The requests aim to ensure that the matter is investigated and handled in accordance with legal requirements. The circumstances surrounding the incident and any potential legal proceedings will be addressed by the relevant authorities.

Officials said the bureau would continue coordinating with concerned institutions to strengthen monitoring of childcare facilities and ensure compliance with prescribed standard operating procedures. The bureau has also issued a list of registered shelter homes to improve transparency and help the public identify authorised facilities.

Sarah Ahmed reiterated that protecting children and women remained a priority for the provincial institution. She said the bureau maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and abuse and would not compromise on the safety and welfare of vulnerable individuals. The transfer of the 16 children highlights the importance of effective oversight, appropriate supervision and protective arrangements in residential care facilities.
