TEHRAN: Iran has defended its military strikes against US targets across the Middle East, arguing that the attacks constitute a legal act of self-defence in response to what Tehran describes as a continuing naval blockade and an escalating US economic campaign.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran considers its actions fully consistent with its inherent right to defend itself under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
Baghaei accused Washington of waging a “full-scale economic war” against Iran while also carrying out attacks that, he claimed, have resulted in civilian casualties and the deaths of children.
According to the spokesman, the alleged attacks on civilians undermine the United States’ justification for its military actions and strengthen Iran’s argument that it is acting in defence of its national interests.
“Iran will continue to regard its defensive measures as lawful,” Baghaei said, stressing that Tehran’s position is based on international law and the UN Charter.
The remarks come amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States, with Tehran warning that continued military and economic pressure could trigger further regional confrontation.]
