LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered the restructuring of the Directorate General Public Relations (DGPR) Punjab and directed immediate measures to clear outstanding payments owed to media organisations.
A meeting chaired by Maryam Nawaz was held to review the performance and future structure of the provincial information department. Information and Culture Minister Azma Zahid Bukhari briefed the meeting on matters related to the department.
During the meeting, the chief minister ordered an overhaul of the DGPR and approved a new building for its headquarters. She stressed the need to modernise the department in line with the requirements of the rapidly changing media environment.
Maryam Nawaz emphasised that timely access to information is essential, particularly in an era of an unprecedented flow of information. She highlighted the importance of helping citizens distinguish between accurate information and misinformation.
The chief minister also directed relevant authorities to ensure that the public remains informed about government welfare initiatives and development measures.
Regarding the media sector, Maryam Nawaz instructed officials to take immediate steps to clear outstanding media dues. The move is aimed at addressing pending payments owed to media organisations.
She also called for an independent assessment of DGPR’s performance through third-party validation. The assessment is intended to improve transparency, efficiency and accountability within the provincial public relations department.
The proposed restructuring and modernisation of DGPR reflects the Punjab government’s focus on adapting its information and public communication system to the changing needs of the modern media landscape.
