A severe heatwave has tightened its grip across Sindh, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warning that temperatures in several districts could reach as high as 50°C. The extreme weather conditions are expected to continue until May 31, affecting millions of residents across the province.
According to the latest PMD forecast, upper Sindh districts including Sukkur, Larkana, Nawabshah, Jacobabad, and Shikarpur are likely to experience the highest temperatures, ranging between 47°C and 50°C. Weather experts have noted that these temperatures are significantly above seasonal averages, with some areas expected to record temperatures 4°C to 6°C higher than normal.
The heatwave is not limited to upper Sindh. Southern districts such as Tharparkar, Badin, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, and Jamshoro are also expected to face extremely hot weather, with temperatures ranging from 44°C to 47°C. Authorities have expressed concerns over the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Despite the ongoing heatwave, meteorologists have indicated that changing weather patterns and the arrival of western disturbances may bring some relief in early June. Several districts, including Qambar Shahdadkot, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, and Tharparkar, could receive thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and rainfall. Light rain is also possible in scattered parts of the province, potentially helping to lower temperatures.
Karachi is expected to remain hot and humid over the coming days, with daytime temperatures likely to range between 35°C and 37°C. While the coastal city may not experience the extreme temperatures seen in interior Sindh, high humidity levels could increase discomfort and health risks.
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, and take special care of children, elderly individuals, and those with existing medical conditions. Emergency services and disaster management authorities remain on alert to respond to any heat-related emergencies.
