Sindh Announces School Holiday on August 4 for Chehlum 2026

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has announced that all public and private schools across the province will remain closed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in observance of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).

According to an official notification, the holiday will be observed on 20th Safar 1448 AH, marking the annual Chehlum commemorations. The decision applies to all government and privately managed educational institutions operating under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department throughout Sindh.

The notification stated that the holiday was approved following a decision made during the Provincial Steering Committee meeting held on February 12, 2026.

Chehlum marks the conclusion of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family members, and companions in the Battle of Karbala. Every year, thousands of devotees participate in mourning processions, Majalis, and religious gatherings across Sindh and other parts of Pakistan.

To ensure public safety during the observance, the Sindh Home Department has announced enhanced security measures throughout the province. Authorities expect large mourning processions featuring Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah, with significant public participation in various cities.

As part of the security plan, the provincial government has imposed a ban on pillion riding on the day of Chehlum to help maintain law and order and reduce security risks during religious processions.

In a separate notification, the Sindh Home Department also extended Section 144 across the province for another month, effective from August 1, 2026. Under Section 144, activities such as wall chalking, public rallies, demonstrations, and the open display of weapons remain prohibited to ensure peace and security.

The provincial government has urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and follow all security guidelines to ensure that Chehlum observances are conducted peacefully across Sindh.
