Supreme Court Warns Lawyers Against Unnecessary Adjournments, May Impose Costs

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has raised serious concerns over the increasing trend of lawyers requesting adjournments without valid reasons, warning that such practices may lead to strict consequences, including compensatory costs.

In a detailed judgment authored by Yahya Afridi, the court emphasized that adjournments should only be granted when supported by sufficient legal grounds. The ruling highlighted that vague reasons, such as personal engagements, do not meet the required legal standard.

According to official data presented in the judgment, a total of 653 adjournment requests were made between January and March 2026. The court expressed disappointment that many of these requests were submitted even when cases were ready for hearing, resulting in wasted judicial time.

The court noted that such casual and convenience-based adjournments reflect a lack of professional discipline and disregard for established legal procedures. It stressed that lawyers appearing before the apex court must uphold higher standards of responsibility and commitment.

The judgment further highlighted the negative impact of unnecessary delays on litigants, especially those with limited financial resources. Repeated adjournments increase legal costs and delay access to justice, undermining public trust in the judicial system.

The Supreme Court made it clear that moving forward, any adjournment request that does not comply with legal requirements may result in penalties, including financial costs imposed under the Supreme Court Rules.

This development signals a stricter approach by the judiciary to ensure timely case disposal and improve the efficiency of Pakistan’s legal system.
