Crude Oil Spills Onto Road After Pipeline Leak in Karachi

KARACHI: An underground oil pipeline developed a leak on Khayaban-e-Sehar, Street 13, in Karachi’s Defence area, causing crude oil to spill across the road and prompting authorities to temporarily close the affected section.

According to police, crude oil spread over the roadway after the underground pipeline developed a leak. The road was closed to traffic as a precautionary measure to protect motorists and pedestrians and allow repair teams to safely address the situation.

A DHA vigilance team reached the location after being alerted about the incident. Relevant authorities were also informed, while teams were deployed to assess the extent of the leakage and take necessary measures.

Police said the affected pipeline is quite old and runs beneath the middle of the road. Following the leakage, the National Refinery stopped the supply through the affected line and began repair work.

Authorities are currently working to repair the damaged pipeline and control the oil spill. Traffic restrictions are expected to remain in place until the repair work is completed and officials determine that the road is safe for public use.

The incident caused disruption for motorists using the affected route, with authorities urging people to avoid the area until repair and cleanup operations are completed.

No casualties or injuries have been reported so far in connection with the pipeline leak.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation as repair teams work to restore the damaged pipeline and clear the spilled crude oil from the roadway.

The incident has also raised concerns about the condition and maintenance of ageing underground infrastructure in densely populated parts of Karachi. Regular inspection and timely maintenance of such pipelines are important to prevent leaks that can create safety risks and disrupt traffic.
