The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has officially announced a public holiday across the province on the 1st of Muharram 1448 AH, subject to the final decision of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee regarding the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon.
According to an official notification issued by the provincial administration, the holiday will be observed to facilitate religious observances associated with the beginning of the Islamic New Year. However, authorities clarified that the exact date of the holiday will depend on the formal moon-sighting announcement made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
Muharram holds immense significance in the Islamic calendar as it marks the start of the new Hijri year and is regarded as one of the four sacred months in Islam. Across Pakistan, Muslims commemorate the month through religious gatherings, sermons, prayers, and various events, particularly leading up to Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram.
The KP government stated that all relevant departments have been directed to make necessary arrangements in accordance with the official moon-sighting decision. Administrative bodies, law enforcement agencies, health departments, and municipal authorities have been instructed to ensure smooth management of religious activities and maintain public convenience during the observance period.
The announcement comes as preparations for Muharram begin across the country. Provincial authorities are expected to coordinate closely with district administrations to implement security plans, traffic management measures, and emergency response systems to facilitate processions and gatherings held during the sacred month.
Earlier, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee convened to determine the beginning of Muharram 1448 AH. Following the review of moon-sighting reports from across the country, the committee confirmed that the crescent moon had not been sighted. As a result, Muharram is set to begin on June 17, while Ashura, observed on the 10th of Muharram, will fall on June 26.
Muharram is a period of reflection, sacrifice, and remembrance for Muslims worldwide. The observance of Ashura holds particular importance, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala. The occasion inspires messages of patience, justice, courage, and standing against oppression.
With the announcement of the public holiday, residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to participate in religious observances while authorities focus on ensuring safety, maintaining order, and providing the necessary support services throughout the holy month.
The KP government’s decision reflects its commitment to facilitating religious practices and ensuring that citizens can observe the beginning of the Islamic New Year with peace, respect, and proper administrative arrangements.
