Power Consumers May Face Rs23.33 Billion Extra Burden Under NEPRA Quarterly Adjustment

Electricity consumers in Pakistan may face an additional financial burden of Rs23.33 billion after power distribution companies approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking recovery of the amount through the quarterly adjustment mechanism. The request relates to the third quarter of 2026, covering July to September.

The distribution companies have proposed changes to electricity tariffs based on costs incurred during the period. According to their application, they are seeking to recover Rs38.92 billion under capacity charges and an additional Rs5.597 billion through operations and maintenance expenses.

However, the companies have also requested a reduction of Rs29.25 billion in adjustments linked to the incremental electricity consumption package. These proposed changes will be reviewed by NEPRA before any final decision is made.

The proposed quarterly adjustment could also affect K-Electric consumers in Karachi. If approved, the adjustment may result in additional charges for electricity users, although the final impact will depend on the regulator’s decision.

NEPRA has scheduled a hearing on the application for November 17. During the hearing, the authority will examine the financial claims submitted by the distribution companies and review the proposed adjustments.

The regulator’s decision will determine whether consumers will face additional charges and how the quarterly adjustment will affect electricity bills. Until NEPRA completes its review and announces a decision, the proposed Rs23.33 billion recovery remains a request submitted by the power distribution companies.
