Shehbaz Sharif Hails Iran–US Ceasefire as Pakistan Steps in as Peacemaker

Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the newly announced ceasefire between Iran and the United States, describing it as a major step toward restoring peace and stability in the region.

In his statement, the prime minister praised both nations for agreeing to an immediate halt in hostilities, calling the move a “wise and timely decision.” He emphasised that choosing dialogue over confrontation reflects a responsible approach, especially at a time when regional tensions remain high.

Highlighting Pakistan’s role as a mediator, Shehbaz Sharif invited official delegations from both countries to participate in high-level peace talks in Islamabad. These discussions, referred to as the “Islamabad Talks,” are scheduled to begin on April 10, 2026.

The prime minister expressed optimism that these talks could pave the way for a long-term agreement, reducing tensions not only between Iran and the United States but also across conflict-affected regions such as Lebanon and the wider Middle East.

He further stressed the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement and urged all parties to remain committed to peaceful conflict resolution. According to Sharif, Pakistan aims to provide a neutral and constructive platform for meaningful dialogue.

The development signals Pakistan’s growing role in international diplomacy and peacebuilding, as the country steps forward to facilitate negotiations between major global players.

Observers believe that if successful, the Islamabad Talks could mark a significant turning point in regional stability and global peace efforts.
