Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met US President Donald Trump during a reception banquet hosted for world leaders on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The interaction took place during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to New York, where he attended the UN General Assembly proceedings and held meetings with several international leaders.
The meeting was confirmed by Pakistan’s Press Information Department, which released photographs showing Shehbaz Sharif and Donald Trump standing together and shaking hands. The photographs were provided by the White House.
Officials did not disclose details of any substantive conversation between the two leaders during the reception. The interaction was described as an exchange of greetings during the gathering of world leaders.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the United Nations General Assembly on September 25 as part of Pakistan’s participation in the UNGA session. During his own address, President Donald Trump also referred to the Pakistani prime minister and described him as a “terrific man.”
The meeting came at a time when Pakistan has been involved in diplomatic efforts concerning regional tensions, including efforts aimed at reducing tensions between the United States and Iran. During his UNGA visit, Shehbaz Sharif also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as part of Pakistan’s wider diplomatic engagements.
The Pakistani and US leaders have met on several occasions in recent years. Earlier in 2026, they attended events associated with the “Board of Peace”, an initiative focused on developing a roadmap for ending the conflict in Gaza.
Shehbaz Sharif and Trump also met at the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in Egypt in October 2025 following the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Their first meeting took place at the White House in Washington in September 2025. Discussions during that meeting included regional security, counterterrorism and bilateral cooperation.
The latest interaction at the UNGA reception was brief, with the two leaders exchanging greetings and shaking hands. No formal agenda or details of a separate bilateral discussion were disclosed by officials.
